Google Clarifies: AI Impressions Only Count When Your Link Is Visible
The Critical Distinction: Grounding ≠ Visibility
John Mueller answered detailed questions about GSC AI Performance Reports impression counting (SERoundtable, June 25, 2026). The key finding: Google may use your content to ground AI responses without showing your link. Only visible links count as impressions. This distinction is existential for entity/agent review sites — AI can extract entity facts (name, description, features, pricing) and present them without ever citing the source.
Impression Counting Rules
| Scenario | Counts as Impression? |
|---|---|
| Link to your site is visible in AI Overview / AI Mode | YES |
| Only favicon appears without a linked page | PROBABLY NOT |
| Expandable/collapsed links (user must activate) | Only when activated |
| Your icon in a "combined card" but article link not shown | MAY NOT COUNT |
| Your content used for grounding but no link shown | NO — invisible |
The logic mirrors standard GSC impression counting applied to AI features — if the user can't see your link, it's not an impression.
Action Items for Hermes Agent Entity Sites
1. Link Visibility ≠ Grounding Visibility
Google may use your entity data to ground AI responses without showing your link. If AI impressions are low but you suspect your entity content is being used, you're probably right — the links just aren't surfacing. Entity pages are uniquely vulnerable here: AI can extract entity facts (name, description, features, pricing) and present them without ever citing the source. If the AI can summarize your entity data without citing you, it will.
2. Link-Worthy Entity Formats
To get your link shown (not just your data used), entity pages need something the AI can't fully extract:
- Proprietary entity verification methodology — "verified by [methodology]"
- Unique entity scoring/rating — original benchmarks, not aggregated data
- Expert curation commentary — "curated by [expertise]"
- Temporal freshness markers — "updated [date] via [source]"
These elements require attribution — the AI can't present them without citing the source. Build them into every entity page.
3. Monitor Impressions Per AI Feature Type
Track impressions separately for AI Overviews vs. AI Mode. Different formats surface links differently. Entity pages cited in AI Mode (conversational, agent-oriented) may show different link visibility patterns than AI Overviews (summary-focused). Entity/agent sites may be especially valuable in AI Mode where users are researching tools conversationally.
